Autism Visualizations
We have created a number of autism related visualizations. Some are just for fun while others were created to provide some insight into the data.
Interactive
Our interactive autism visualizations are using technology from Many-Eyes from IBM Alphaworks and Motion Chart from Google Visualization API.
Google Motion Trends Disability Prevalence:
This visualization is the most significant autism visualization we have created. It provides insight into our disability dataset by allowing you to compare data over time for all 13 eligibility categories, 50 states, and for the last 16 years. The interactive visual can be used by researchers to look for complex relationships between the eleigibility categories. We think it rocks - thanks Google.
Many-Eyes Autism Prevalence:
The many eyes autism prevalence visualization is using our disability dataset that we uploaded to the IBM servers. If you visit the many eyes website you can generate new visualizations using the same dataset and also display the visualizations on your website or blog. We uploaded both autism prevalence and autism cases by state for years 1992 to 2008.
Many-Eyes Autism Cases:
The Many-Eyes autism cases visualization is using our disability dataset that we uploaded to the IBM servers. If you visit the Many-Eyes website you can generate new visualizations using the same dataset and also display the visualizations on your website or blog. We uploaded both autism prevalence and autism cases by state for years 1992 to 2008.
Wordles
We have created a number of autism-related Wordles ( word clouds that give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text). Some of the source text is only a couple of paragraphs, while others can be hundreds of pages, which require a significant effort to compile.
Autistic Disorder Wordle:
Generated from the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for Autistic Disorder (299.00) which consists of 366 words and can easily be found on a number of websites.
Aspergers Disorder Wordle:
Generate from the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for Asperger's Disorder (299.80) which can easily be found on a number of websites.
NIH Autism Grants Wordle:
was generated from the all of the NIH autism grant abstracts for 2007. Source text was pulled from our NIH grant funding database and consisted around 145,000 words.
Simpsonwood Transcript Wordle:
Generated from a transcribed copy of the original copy of the Simpsonwood conference transcripts. The original Simpsonwood conference transcript was a 256 page scanned document and the transcribed copy consists of around 80,000 words.
IACC 2010 Strategic Plan:
Generated from The 2010 Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee Strategic Plan for Autism Spectrum Disorder Research - January 19, 2010. It consists of 18,000 words.
GIS Maps
We have created a number of autism prevalence GIS maps. In order to create these maps we requested the data directly from the state because we needed the data broken down by either county, school district, or intermediate unit. We used a number of free tools to create these including TatukGIS viewer from TatukGIS, and GIMP, an image processing program.
